Training and Continuing Education

All of us are certified or in the process of certifying with Birth University ©. We are Postpartum Doulas and Lactation Specialists. Some of us have trained with CAPPA as Postpartum Doulas and Lactation Educators as well. We have over 25 years of combined experience as Postpartum Doulas. We stay abreast of current information through medical journals, evidence based research, and current publications. Honeysuckle Doulas are involved with the birth community in Metro Atlanta and participate in activities hosted by Georgia Birth Network, Baby Steps Online, Babies ‘R’ Us, and the YMCA. We are committed to continuing education so we can pass information along to our clients about medical breakthroughs, current breast feeding information, and product recalls, etc...

Healthcare Backgrounds

In addition to our Postpartum Doula & Lactation Specialist training, we have diverse educational backgrounds. Some of us have Bachelors in Health or Psychology as well as Nursing or E.M.T. Licenses. Many of us have held medical positions as: Emergency Medicine Technician, Neonatal Critical Care Assistant, Surgery Assistant, Mental Health Assistant, Red Cross worker, Chiropractor, Massage Therapist, Community Health Educator, etc... However, Honeysuckle Doulas are not fulfilling a medical role when we are hired as Postpartum Doulas and Lactation Specialists. We are counselors, educators, care givers, and helpers. We give physical, emotional, and informational support, but we never diagnose, treat, or give advice for medical situations. Having said that, we do educate parents on normal newborn physical characteristics and behaviors, which can help relax a parent, thus reducing the amount of medically unnecessary calls to the Pediatrician. We are familiar with local resources to address each need that may arise with a family. Honeysuckle Doulas know when to refer to qualified professional for a situation that is beyond our scope. We support our clients in finding answers and solutions.

Families

All of us with children have children have breast fed from 6 months to 2 1/2 years. The youngest of our offspring is 8 months old and the oldest of our offspring have children of their own! A few of our doulas have natural twins that they successfully nursed. One of our doulas has been a foster mother to 10 children and is now a grandmother of toddlers! We, at Honeysuckle Doulas are dedicated to our own families first and foremost. Once our own families are secure and happy we are eager to share our excess love and support with our clients’ families.

Specialties

We are happy to work with multiples, special needs babies, and non-traditional families. Many of our clients have chosen IVF and surrogacy. We understand and help our clients to work through the gifts and challenges that go along with that.
